Hi Deanna again
I am relitivley new to axolotls and i was just wondering: i have two leucistic axolotls and they both (i think) have Scoliosis, well i know that one of them does. I am getting a new axolotl in a couple of weeks does anyone know if it would be safe (or not) to put him in with my other 2 or will he contract Scoliosis aswell? My friend bought 18 babies a few months ago and she wants to get rid of some of them. I have seen them and the one that i am getting seems fine, the only thing is he floats upside down alot.

Scoliosis, or any bending of the spine, is usually due to genetics or bad nutrition. MBD, metabolic bone disorder, can be caused by low calcium and vitamin D in the diet.

Deanna - I would avoid an axolotl who "floats upside down alot".

Floating upside down is not normal and it could have a bacterial infection in its gut or some other problem.

cool thanks for that cynthia i was havin second thoughts about it.
Joan - do you know if there is anything i can do for my axies to straiten the spine (sorry pretty dumb question) or will they be like that forever?
I have changed their diet and feed them salmon pellets and worms and the occasional beef stirfry strips.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
