Okay, maybe i am being paranoid but one of my little guys is floating at the top of the tank been there for a few minutes.. He was swimming around looking like he was having fun then he just started floating there and I heard that that is a sign of sickness... How long before I start to worry? Its night time, there nocturnal right, so could he just be playing? THere all very active right now.. Dont seem to mind the dim light i have hanging from the ceiling over there tank at all! Thanks

He's back down at the bottom now, could it have been to much air in him? He was playing in the "bubble wall" before he started floating.
He likes to swim around in the bubbles, its great

no they float from time to time. like when they take gulps of air. i think its just if they stay there for ages. if they do float for ages you can rub their bellies and that seems to make them release the air. not really anything to worry about

And another thing, if they do float and can't get down, put em in really shallow water, enough to just cover them. They should be right in the morning.

I have seen my little ones float in hangout position for as long as 30 min at a time.

One of my large axolotls floats for hours sometimes, it looks like it is in a trance.

As long as their butt isn't what is keeping them floating and they are not tipped to one side, don't worry.

Thanks guys! (and gals!)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
