Hey everyone --

When I woke up this morning and checked on my axolotls, I noticed that Satchel had two wounds on her nose and back of her neck. I have her quarantined in the feeding tub at the moment, but I would like to know what else I can do so they don't get infected.

Here's a picture. (I originally thought that this was a fungal infection, but I took her out of the tank for a closer look and realized that these are wounds.)

Thanks!

Hummm... dot... i wonder who had the nip!

Have you tried any salt baths, they are good fo healing wounds i think as well as killing off fugus.

Good luck!!

I think she may have nicked herself on the intake pipe from the filter ... or at least, that's how she got the gouge on the back of her neck ...

Here's a pic of the setup. (Forgive the murky water, someone had just pooed and they thought it'd be hysterical to swim around and stir it up. They do that.)

Hi Dot, you know enough to keep them seperated while she heals and the salts baths will help fight infection too.

If you can keep her a little cooler too that should help prevent bacteriel infections taking a hold.

Axies can take quite a nick out of each other despite having no real teeth. Se if you can make the intake pipe more inaccessible too...just to rule out future nicks.

Jen suggested an intake attachment that looks like it will work to avoid having the exposed edges of the intake tube.

When I checked on Satchel earlier today, she seemed fine and the wound on her nose has already started to heal itself, and the gash on her back looks clear and is also healing.

Right now, she's still situated in the feeding tub (approx. 2-3 gallon rectangular tub) in the bathroom (door closed, for those of you who are familiar with my cat,) and for good measure, I tossed in a bag of frozen water and a frozen bottle. She seems to be doing well ... if not a little confused as to why she's in the feeding tub and it's not raining pellets.

The other axolotls are doing fine too - no scrapes, cuts, etc., so I'm pretty sure that she may have spooked and nailed herself on the edge of the filter intake. However, Bucky's a little confused as to where her sister is.

Glad to here she seem to be getting better Dot... Just remember to keep an eye on her!... And keep Gavin out the way lol

Thanks Lil Kim.

Satchel is officially mad at me now for keeping her in isolation.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
