Breeding daphnia?

Hi folks,

I've been looking into the possibility of breeding daphnia, on which to feed the baby axies when they hatch.

Has anyone had any success with this? If so, what methods did you use in creating your daphnia hatchery, and what did you find was best to feed them on?

Is there anything I should particularly steer clear of?

Thankyou!

oh, dear god. they really need no help breeding whatsoever. just buy some live daphnia and pop them in a tub and off you go. nothing else! just pop tiny bits of fish/reptile pellets in and leave the algea and stuff in there. thats it. your own little ecosystem. i found a tub the other day that must have had a pregnant female in cos suddenly there were thousands about a month later. good luck!

But where can you buy live daphnia????
I'm in New Zealand and can't find it anywhere!

Hi froggy

As you know i have babies at the moment and i am feeding them live daphnia. They absolutely love the stuff. I havnt bothered to try and breed them as one of my local stores sells it for 35p a bag. Only problem i have is that they eat so much its costing me a small fortune

but its def worth it as they look so cute. I will post some pics soon

Bluefroggy, keep in mind that it will take about a month for a daphnia culture to really "get going" to the point that you can harvest them. In the meantime, you'll have to keep buying them. You really are lucky to have them locally available; I have to order starter cultures by mail.

There are many sets of instructions in the 'net. Just do a search for "culturing daphnia" or something like that. Good luck!
