Water smells, well, not so good.

Well, iv´e got a new tank 6 days ago that has been cycling now for, well, 6 days. Im quite new to the whole aquarium thingy so I just wonder.. The water smells really bad, but i guess the smell will disseapear (at least a little) when the bacteria has grown strong and can deal with the ammonia and nitrite!? Am i wrong? And also, does it help to have the aquarium lights turned on when cycling? My gut just says that the bacteria will multiply better beacuse bacteria loves warmth.

what did you use to start the cycle ? When i set mine up for the first time i never had any smells i used frozen brine shrimp

I didn´t have anything in the first two days cuz I didn´t have anything to put in. But after after two days I putted in some fishflakes and some bloodworms. Well, I think some waterchanges after the cycle is complete should do the trick!

I would say take out some of the flake/bloodworm debris right away. You need only a very tiny amount of nutrients to get things going. The excess rots, and... stinks.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
