Sand thickness

Was just wondering what is the maximum thickness that the sand should be when you have live plants in the tank? I read somewhere that the root systems of live plants help prevent those bad air pockets so was curious if the max thickness can be upped or not?

yea its true that root systems help prevent air pockets. i would have it about 4-6 cms thick. it will take at least 5 plants scattered throughout the tank to prevent air pockets in a 3 ft. how big is your tank?.

You can take large rocks and put them over plant roots; this will help keep them anchored.

Am getting a 3ft soon. Atm I am keeping my axies in a plastic underbed storage container as my 2ft has some major problems and I cant keep conditions stable enough. Stupid tank!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
