New substrate - when can the axies go home

I have just changed from river stones to sand - everything everyone says about the muck left between stones is true.
I have the axies sitting in buckets at the moment - when Is it safe to put them back?
The water is pH neutral, 0.1 for nitrite, 0 for nitrate and 0.5 for ammonia. The water is fairly clear as I washed the sand pretty thoroughly I think. I only changed about half the water and they have the same plants and terracotta pots as before so hopefully have enough good bacteria to get to normal soon.
I think they would like to go home.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
