Hello all, am calling on the experience of the knowledge of the forum, lol.

I have just (and i mean just) installed a new external filter to my 4 footer and am running it along with my internal one until it is working with it bacteria buddies, how long do you think i will have to do this. Everything else in my tank has been running for ages so all of that stuff has the friendlies.

Thanks Jen x

hi jenny, what you could do is take the filter media out of your internal place it in your external and then it will shorten the amount of time to take to cycle.

yeah that would be a better idea IMO, that way your external will colonise quicker (being closer) and it has more media anyway so it doesnt matter if your internal has fresh stuff because the external can handle it..

Jenny, I did the same thing you are when I got my 55gallon tank. If you keep all the substrate and decorations wet when you transfer them, and run it together for about a week, you should have a nicely colonized filter. I had no problems whatsoever doing it that way.

Good luck.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
