Yes, I did check out those frequently recommended sites. I have readings of
Ammonia- 1.0
Nitrite-0
Nitrate-0
I'm pretty sure that there's some bacteria in there, I've seen the ammonia levels rise and fall. The problem is that the nitrite and nitrate levels never changed. What should I do now? Will a Bio-wheel replace this mess altogether?

How long have you been cycling? It can take up to 3 months in some cases. Heating the water will make it cycle faster.

Using a biowheel just gives your bacteria some place to grow.

It's been cycling for about a month. I thought that when the ammonia levels drop, nitrite levels rise. I think I'll just buy the filter...

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
