Sand

Sand is so boring but according to almost everyone on this site it is the best of the best, so were do I get this sand? I don’t
want any sand either I want grainy stuff.
Hmm little rocks are just so much
more attractive and I have never had
problems with it but if is for the good of
my axies then a guess I have to. Someone
should invent colour sand I think it would be
a hit.

You can buy colored sand. I have white sand in my tank tho because it makes cleaning easier (can see waste easier). I find sand a bit boring as well, so what I did was made it half sand half river rocks. I also put some live plants in. I have pictures of it in the photo gallery. I got my sand from a local pet store for 3$ and it was enough for my 10 gallon. Not all pet stores carry the stuff though.

I am supposed to be getting my axies in the mail today, yeah!!!!!! One wild and one leucistic, and it is the first time I have tried to keep axolotls, so I will need some help, heh. I got some sand from PetSmart---it is black; they didn't have any other color (why can't they have purple?!

).

There is a plastic plant pot on either side for them to hide in, and it is a 20 gallon tank---what do you think of it, is this going to be good for them? Do you use a regular siphon with sand?

I love the black sand, I wish I could get some of that here! I'm planning on going sand hunting this weekend, maybe I'll get lucky but the only black sand I've seen sold is potting mix!

Your setup looks great, your axies will love it

Leanne - Congrats on the new axolotls

They look lovely.

Please let me know how you like the Black Tahitian Moon Sand. I have the white sand of the same brand and I think it smaller than the black. The white sand sucks up pretty easy when I'm cleaning. I was thinking of using the black in the next tank I set up.

I am indeed loving the moon sand, although I have never tried any other kind of sand to compare it to, I think white would be neat, too. What kind of siphon do you use, by the way?

I use a turkey baster to pick up poo.

I use a no spill clean and fill (water python) to change water. But I don't vacuum the sand with it because it just sucks it all up.

I have a small pennplax battery operated vacuum with a bag that I line with filter floss to suck the debris off the top of the sand with. I do not use the wide tip that comes with these vacuums, and I do not stick the vacuum nozel down into the sand I just hover above the surface.

Once I have it all vacuumed I turn off the vacuum and just stab it into the sand all round the tank to "fluff up" the sand and smooth it out. I like seeing fresh axolotl tracks in the sand.

Hmmm, will see if I can find the Pennplax at PetSmart? That's the only pet store around here basically,

I bought my golden from Pet Magic in Cannington, seems to be one of the biggest pet shops south of the river. Can't really comment on the north of river ones but Anne-Marie knows a good one, I forget the name, and am too lazy to check past posts *ducks* ;)

Halska, you might be thinking of Veba's in O'Connor which is reasonably priced but I reckon that online aquarium supplies are probably the way to go. Also places like City Farmers seem to be a fair bit cheaper than your specialist pet shops. A for pet supplies in Bunbury, Nathan - I got no idea

. Hey, have you guys got that really long jetty or is that somewhere else?

That is in Australind north of Bunbury. I live in Australind not Bunbury but I put Bunbury because Australind is a suburb of Bunbury. Unless are you talking about Busselton jetty. have you been to Bunbury at all anne-marie?

Ages ago. I just remember fishing from the long jetty and STILL not catching anything worthwhile.
