Activating yeast for Daphnia

I have a small daphnia culture that I set up about a week ago, and I still haven't fed them anyting.
I guess they'll be fine eating the bacteria for now, but as of yet there are no signs of algae (hardly any sun over here ATM), so I'm thinking of giving them a little yeast.
I've read the Daphnia article of this site, and is says that activated yeast is better then inactive.
I'll buy the yeast from a bakery, but I've no idea if they're active or not.

Do you need to do anything to activate them?
Does active and inactive mean alive and dead?
 
Pop a tiny crumb in a cup of warm, dechlorinated water.
Add a little teeny bit of sugar.
Use a teaspoon to get a drop of activated yeast, feed to daphs.
Activated yeast - you can buy either brewers or bakers - bakers being the best.
Bakers you can buy from any good supermarket, it will be a brown cube, slightly squishy.
 
The yeast i've seen from a baker near my school is white and crumbly...but I'm sure that they're alive, because we used those blocks for experiments at school to see how much CO2 they produce in variable environments. (I study biology)
Those blocks of yeast will also do, right?
 
Yes, any live yeast is good. I just mix it with water until it's dissolved (not bothering with sugar). Then I add it to the daph tub.

I will move this thread to the Live Foods section of the forum tomorrow.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
