I'm planning on buying two 10cm axi's, I think they are too small to sex, is that true? Also will I need to separate them just in case they are opposites? I don't fancy babies

Hi Vicki. Yes, they are too small to sex at 10cm. You can start to sex them from approx 15cm onwards (6 inches). And if you wana make totally sure not to get babies, do keep them in separate containers if they are a boy and a girl

would they try to mate at 10cm in size? I know it would not be ideal for the female axi if they do.

If you see one laying eggs, it's a female. If you see one dropping spermatophores, it's a male.

Other than that, it's slightly subjective. After reaching sexual maturity, males have large cloaca, and females are usually fatter. But I've seen females with big cloacas and obese males.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
