How to Raise PH

Good News, My tank has finished cycling

Over the time it was cycling, I added into the tank the waste from my Axolotls who were being housed in containers and buckets. Problem is that my PH is low, which I am guessing this was caused from the plants?

I'm having a bit of trouble trying to understand how to raise the PH so if anyone can explain it to me, it would help me greatly. Can I just add in Table Salt or will I have to buy aquarium salts?

My PH is currently 6.8 but according to the link following that is expectable, but 7 of course is better.

Will follow shortly with pictures of my Axolotls in their new tank

Limestone! or sea shells. The calcium carbonate in these will slowly dissolve and raise your pH.

Ah! Thanks Joan so much! I have so many shells from the Oregon coast and they will work perfectly

Thanks again!

I find that putting crushed coral in your filter works great.

It helps improve water hardness and also provides a great medium for your beneficial bacteria to grow.

If your water isn't very hard you will notice that the plants will swing the PH about a bit over the course of the day (it will drop overnight and reach a high just before dark)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
