Mouldy microworms

Hey everybody,
I'm looking after 70 axolotl larvae while my friend is on holiday. I feed them with brineshrimp and have microworms as backup.
I started a new microworm culture with moist white bread in the bottom like they said in the petshop, but now it's growing heaps of mould on the bread.
Any ideas what I did wrong?

I was advised to use yeast, oats and water as a culture and I didn't have any problems.

Yes, yeast will keep down the mold to some extent. I used a paste of oatmeal, corn meal, and live yeast. No problems with mold.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
