hey. i was just wondering if anyone knows if you can the salmon pellets that ive heard so much about but never been able to find are sold in australia or would be able to be shipped to aus? (probably not. knowing australias customs) grr. yeah anyone from australia know? does anyone else know what other good food for axoltols are. im feeding my frozen bloodworm and want to give her something different (somethig you can get in australia) . ive heard worms are good. are they any kind of garden worms? alive or dead?? lol sorry if these seems stupid questions but i have no idea.

thanks.

Shane, don't know about the pellets, but garden worms are fine as long as the ground is not treated with pesticides or fertilizers. Or you can buy them at a baitshop. Live is best. You can also feed crickets. Mine won't take them from the surface as they don't notice them. So I hold them in front of their face. Once they eat one, they realize there are more at the surface and eat them. You can also try beef/lamb's heart/liver in moderation.

thanks heaps

Shane, my axies hate those - they just ignore them, turn their nose away. They seem to be really dry, quite small and not really that easy for them to get down their throat, even if they had a fancy to.
The type of pellets you might be referring to could also be found maybe (I've never tried) in specialist aquarium shops as hi-protein pellets, meant for any fish. Worth a try , I guess??

k kool thanks. luckily you told me i was thinking of getting some. ive just been feeding mine frozen blood worms and thought she might like something different. ill look for those hi-protein pellets if i see any around ill tell you what they're like. thanks

If you can find fresh black worms at aquarium or pet shops, these are usually accepted. They can be a bit messy. As for earthworms, I dont know about in NSW - do you guys have Bunnings over there?? They sell small, indoor worm farms for around $20. Worth the investment. Some axies eat em, some don't.

You can get the pellets at most fishing/bait stores here, same with earthworms.

indiana university axolotl colony will ship to aus, but it must go through quarantine. I checked agaes ago, and they will send but you have to fill out forms and stuff with australian quarantine, and pay a huge fee.
I rang all the local fisheries and fish farms and asked what pellets they use and where they get them from. Then rang up the producers and found out what made up the pellets.
After many wasted hours I gave up. I couldn't find anywhere with a soft moist pellet, and everyone wanted to sell me 25kg bags of pellets. Now I just feed earthworms (big fat scrub worms which I buy from a bait shop) and prawns/fresh fish for treats.

the pellets that indiana university sells are used and created for feeding salmon in large fisheries. they're made by rangen inc. you might be able to find them by checking around suppliers that cater to fish farms or zoos.

i have pellets similar to those ones in the link but made by someone else (cant remember sorry) but they look identical. my axies love them but i cant hand feed them as theyre too small so i just chuck them in and let them find it for themselves. they seem to like them. only downside is in the next few days i find large red runny poops all over the place *gets out the turkey baster*

I have used garden worms. I soak these in a bit of water first to get the dirt out. Less pollution. I am in Brisbane and my local pet shop will get almost anything I need if I need. Maybe yours will do the same if you ask them.I also use the protein sinking pellets.

What are protein sinking pellets? do the axolotls like them?

protein sinking pellets are basicly that. They are a chocolate brown colour. Come in various sizes. We often feed these to fingerlings (siver perch, sleepy cod crayfish anything really). They are pretty well mainly all protein.

Shane I will go to the pet shop tommorrow and find out the brand of them and basic make up of the pellet. They dont seem to be as dry as some other pellets.I will let you know tommorrow afternoon about them.

shane i live in melb oz

Hi Shane. Yes it was the protein pellets I checked out. It is a food you give as a variety. Have you ever given your axolotls frozen turtle dinner. I cut it in half and give half at a time.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
