I've been watching Chokito tonight and noticed he flicks his gills an awful lot. What does this mean? Water tested few days ago and it was fine. Other than flicking his gills he seems perfectly happy, he's eating and not coming to the surface to gulp air.

mine do that also. I'am shure but I then it is because they are lazy and don't want to walk around to move water over the gills.

I'ts to circulate the water over their gills so that they have enough oxygen. As long as you don't notice anything abnormal with the gills then it is ok

my salamanda dosnt seen to swim much, any 1 else finding this?

Axolotls as they get older don't swim as much as when they're young. Generally if you find they swim a lot there may be something wrong with them or the water quality.

How big/old is your, I'm assuming you mean axolotl and how long have you had him? Also, as it's off topic it's always best to start your own thread so people can respond to you directly about anything.

Chokito must be lazy then, cause he doesnt do much except eat.

Kellie, that about sums up the lifestyle of an axolotl.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
