Horrible pet shop conditions.

I was going to my local pet shop ( i bought my melanoid kenghis there) to buy some axolotl food. While i was there i decided to look at their axolotls. i was horrified.

I first saw a golden albino, he looked like a skeleton barely alive. he was so thin, and i mean really thin. and there, on the other side of the tank was a dead axolotl with a small fish nibbling at it. "stupid people!" i though to my self "you're not supposed to put fish like that with axies. i was disgusted but didn't say anything to the, because im a pretty shy person.

when i bought my kenghis from the same place their were no fish or starving (not to mention dead) axies in the tank with him. thankfully i bought him before they reduced those other axies to terrible tank conditions.

they need to learn more about the axies. those memories still haunt my mind.

oh and another thing. they told me that these kind of small shrimp (not brime, but the larger ones) were freshwater, while when i went their before to buy kenghis they told me they were saltwater. what are they?! and they also told me that it was 'very, very strange' that my axie didnt eat the shrimp before.

Unfortunately Jade as axies are becoming more and more popular as pets more pet shops are buying them in and don't have a clue as to their requirements, i see it over here all the time and tend to try to point them in the right direction....Ian

definately ask the employees, show your concerns.
It also could be they took the animals in from someone who didnt want them...In that case they are usually kept out of the way, but you dont know, so you should find out!!

Yeah. Normal pet shops dont have a clue. Its a shame. Thing is they cant specialise in axies because they arn't popular enough. So the care they get given is that of a fish...and we all know they need more.

Yeah but not all the pet shops are like that i no this guy, which is like the owner of a pet shop, like ian said they are becoming more popular and the owner was requested by loadsa people if the shop had axies. he got a few shippments of them and he did loadsa resource on them but sometimes a newbie will make mistakes, so you gotta give them credit for trying to satisfly the custommers needs.

Sometimes they just need a gentle nudge in the right direction. The pet shop near my house didnt have a clue to begin with and the ignored advice from other people because it wasnt presented as advice, it was more like a telling off. I have made some careful suggestions to these pet shop owners using my axies as examples and they have gone with everything I have said. They are trying to find out everything they can about all the animals in thier store. I reckon they just didnt know where to look with the axies.

i went to a large petstore today and i walked out with tears in my eyes. They had 5 axie tanks, in tank 1 there were 2 axies covered in fungus, one even had it comming out of its mouth.
Tank 2 had 3 axies 1 had 3 missing legs, the other axie had all 4 legs missing and the 3rd axie apperaed to have lost one of its eyes.
Tank 3 had one dead axie which was covered in fungus, all i could see was a tail sticking out.
Tank 4 had 2 small axies and both had fungus devloping.
Tank 5 had 2 dead axies, again covered in fungus.
The axies that were alive where very under weight. i spoke to the manager and he had nothing to say but kept asking me to leave.
i went to the police station (as my friend is a cop and a big axie fan) and told her about this crultey, she when there in the afternoon and they all were removed. She inquired about them and he claimed he never sold them. However she made a report and sent it off to the rspca.
I hope this idiot gets shut down.

Good on ya! I hope the idiot gets shut down too.
I never went back to a petshop where I found a dead little axolotl and other two with fungus. If I see sick and dead axies there again, I will report them to RSPCA in no time at all.

I'm glad to say only one of my LFS stock 'Lotls, and they feed them very well.

They only keep youngsters in, and advise all their customers on how to properly keep them.

My only issue is the gravel, but I understand they can't easily remove that. HOWEVER, it is a very smooth, rather small pebble gravel, and they seem to pass it fairly quickly too.

If only other stores did the same.

I'm sad to say that I was in a fairly reputable shop the other day, and they had a Cynops orientalis that had been in there for a few days. A week ago, it was missing two legs and had significant fungus. Yesterday it was belly up and covered in fungus. I took the opportunity to show my herp-sitter what fungus looked like, for future reference.

This shop is mainly reptile based, and normally take good care of their animals. I was slightly upset and brought it to the attention of the owner, to whom I had pointed out the fungus last week.

Can't win 'em all!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
