You won't be able to tell the age unless you know the hatch date. At 20 cm, it's probably sexually mature. It looks like a female, but a better shot from the side would make it easier to tell.

The only way I know which is which with my two was when i actually watched Lady give birth! Now i tell them apart by the fact that Draco has one stumpy gill! - that and we've separated them...

Though there is not much time between this and last post the axie has become more rounded (thicker through). So perhaps female. Thank you for your thoughts.

Sharn, using girth alone is a bad idea. I've seen some pretty skinny females, especially those who are not carrying eggs. My vote is female based on the small cloaca and the pot belly.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
