I just got mine about 5 months ago, and they were 2 months when i got them, so roughly 7 months old. How can you tell if they are male or female? and how long before they start breeding? thanks!

P.S
i am new to this, and was wondering if there was any kind of fish that could be put in the tank with the axolotls?
One is pure white and the other is like a brownish/brindle color

You can tell if an axolotl is a male or female by looking at the cloacal region. The males have a swollen bump and females have a smaller bump. Females are often more fatter than males and males are skinny and have a longer tale. I dont know about breeding axolotls but I know you should not put any fish in with the axolotls because the fish will nibble at its gills or the axolotl will eat the fish.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
