Wierd axolotl behaviour

I have two male axolotls, both about 10 inches long. I know they are both males because before I got the second one, my axolotl deposited spermatophores around the tank, and the newer one did the same around his quarantine tank.

Anyway, I saw both my male axolotls raising their tales and swimming around the tank, writing, after depositing spermatophores, and they nudged eachother's cloacas. One proceded to lead the other around the tank, over the spermatophores. Do axolotls get "confused" about the other's gender, or are mine gay? :/

Lol, my males do this too. I think they aren't really all that concerned with who picks up their spermatophores and will try to nudge even other males over them. Mine might be 'prison gay', as I don't have any adult females.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
