Hi All,
I'm new here so thought I should introduce myself. I have 2 axolotls, Fred and Ginger. They are not my first but I am a novice compared to some of you guys here. I have had a fascination with them for years. I lost my last 2 when they tried to metamorphose and I didn't realise what was happening so didn't provide what they needed.
Besides Fred and Ginger I live with 2 cats, 2 Japanese Shiba Inus, 2 finches, a leopard gecko, 2 whites tree frogs and 7 (yes 7) ferrets.

Hi Donna, welcome! I am also rather new to this board and to axolotls, and yes, this board really is invaluable. It is otherwise quite difficult to find good info on our little cuties-axolotls!!
Oh, and I gotta comment on ur 7 ferrets as well...SEVEN?????Wow! Ferrets are so cute, there is one who comes for walks with his owner in the park near my work, I have known him for years, and he is soo funny & adorable

what the heck? your axolotls tried to metamorphose? i thought that was extremely rare? or were they tiger salamanders? who ha hee?

ferrets are cool but they're very hard to get here as if they escape then bad news for our wildlife, i think you can only have 3 at most and even then you're required to have a permit. i'd love to have a pet one though but i'll just have to stick to rats for now. cute ratties.

oh sorry where are my manners, welcome!

Hi Charlotte,
Yes they were axies. My local garden centre used to specialise in them and they lost all theirs with the same symptoms. It was through their research that I learned what happened and how to spot it if it happens again. The temperature and water conditions have to be perfect for it to happen.
We just increased to 8 fuzzie ones today A little lost jill landed here this afternoon and I just can't say no to one in trouble. I guess you must be in Newzealand are you? I wish you had to have permits here, we may have less in rescue if people had to apply to have them. Here's the new addition

. DO you have one you carry arround with you in the house like the one in kindergarten cop?, i once had a little monkey (yes a monkey) with me for a day because his owner (zoo keeper) had to go out of town for the day. It was so cool, i fed it bananas and mango and he messed up my room, threw my cloths at my rbrother which was funny, lol.

Hi Stipe,
My ferrets all live indoors. They have their own room but I don't have them free roaming around the house because they are small and my dogs would definitely kill them. Having a monkey to care for for the day must have been really cool not t o mention a real privilege. I don't agree with keeping them as pets though, they are extremely specialised I would think

Greetings and salutations Donna!!

I love your quote. It's one of my fav's, strangely enough I read it for the first time after finding it in a fortune cookie

I have 2 golden labradors, Alexandra (Alex) and Astro, and 2 Axolotls, Lotle (black) and Falkor (golden). Would love a ferret or 3 but my dogs quite often play with cockroaches and end up wimpering at them sadly when they don't play anymore . . .

Needless to say I wouldn't trust them to play "nicely" with ferrets. They can be a pair of over-zealous BOOF HEADS at times and wouldn't kill playmates on purpose, but ferrets might not survive a playful labrador wrestle.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
