Came home from holiday to find that Julio (my golden axie) had died while I was away.

Turns out that one of the frozen bottles that went in his tank to cool it down had split, leeching the horrid water out from the bottle.

Will start my new tank cycling this weekend and start looking around for 2 new ones.

Gutted. absolutely gutted.

I'm so sorry. If it helps, you were trying to do what was best and couldn't have known it would split on you. I hope some new axies will make you feel better, while I know they won't replace Julio. Best of luck...

deepest sympathy... that's so sad... maybe they could have a babysitter next time to ease your worries... best of luck with your new ones, hope they make you feel happier really soon!!!

Yeah, watch out for Split bottles if you're using them to chill a tank down. Its not my flatmates fault, but its harsh nonetheless.

Going to be visiting lots of pet stores to find the coolest looking axies possible...

very sorry to hear charles. were the frozen bottles fill of water or are they the ones you buy that are blue?.

So sorry for your loss. I don't understand though, how the water from the bottle killed him?

If the bottled water wasn't dechlorinated, or it was some kind of refreezable liquid that wasn't intended to mix with tank water, it poisoned the axie.

Was just water in the bottle. But it was tap water and had been in there a few weeks. I usually make sure the bottle is squeezed in a bit so the water can expand when it freezes, but I think my flatmate had topped it up to make it full

meaning it would have split when it froze.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
