Genetics

Hi , i dont know much about the genetics of an axolotl. I was just wondering if in the future we will see more varieties. The reason im asking is ,( i seen the axie on the gallery the pic from the zoo) i bred rats and showed rats for years, and at one time all you could get was pink eyed white, black hooded and agouti. But now you can get all sorts, from blue, cinnamon, dumbo rex etc, do you think in the future we will see new varieties, just curious.

It's possible. New morphs show up in reptiles all the time. But there is no way to tell for certain if there will be or what they will look like, or how you will get them. There never used to be albino axolotls, until someone cross-bred a morphed adult axolotl with an albino tiger salamander.

If you want to develop other colour morphs, you could try cross-breeding with other ambystomid salamanders (ambystoma salamanders can cross breed with each other with a close to 100% success rate, assuming breeding habits and size are about the same). Keep these bloodlines very seperate from any purebred axolotl lines, though, so the genepool doesn't get too contaminated.

Hey I had rats before we bred them once before there so cute when they are babies

I would love to get a hairless one or a hairless dumbo. Here is a pic of the mom

hey, i used to own a black hooded rat named jerry but we had to give him away because i couldnt afford to buy him a bigger cage.

also when i was little i used to have two other rats named jasper and rocky. most people find rats disgusting because they think of the wild sewer rat, but domestic ones are so cute.

Yes very clean and intelligent, hey! I had a black hood rat too she died though, they don’t live very long average is like 2-4 years I think

the rats that we had were miniature not average rat size. Another good thing about rats is they don’t poo on you (or very rarely do) they do dribble a bit of wee on you though to mark there territory also they don’t smell bad like mice and are very good mothers. As you can see I am very passionate about rats, they are great pets.

they are great pets and are very intelligent creatures. they also get very attached to their owners, jerry used to try and climb up my leg if i ever got up and went to walk away.lol. when i got jerry he used to poo on me but after a while he learnt to go to the toilet in his cage. jasper my old albino one, died and because i was little i was convinced that rocky killed him. oh and i forgot that when we had jasper and rocky we also had two female rats called cindy and julie, we never got to breed them though. people get the wrong idea about rats and think they are unhygeneic and smell but they are actually very clean. rats i think are illegal here in waikiki but we didnt care.

by the way what year are you in at school 8,9? im in year 10 and boy do i get ALOT of homework.

ah i knew i had a photo somewhere, here is Jerry.When he was a baby.<center><table border=1><tr><td>

hi all, I had over 70 rats at one point, and travelled all over with them. I have had your hairless dumbos, rexes, blues, i specialised in Essex rats. I was in the papers with them also.
They are clean, very intelligent, and love human company. I have won best in show a few times and Stud Buck. My rats were huge, not fat all muscle.
My fav was Jim, he was a complete mummys boy. They do live up till about 4 years ( sometimes over) The problem with ratties is breathing problems, and lumps. I now only have 14 as i am quite ill at the moment. They do need huge cages. I have an a huge aviary for mine.
I will post some pics of some of my champions soon.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
