Yay!!!! I'm getting an Melanoid axolotl in three-four weeks time!! I'm not sure what to name it though. I was thinking Kuro Ryu (Black Dragon in Japanese) or something a little bit funny.

awww...hope we can see pics when you get him/her. is it definately a melanoid or a dark wildtype? you will be able to tell once you get it if you are unsure by checking around the pupil of the eye. there will be a golden ring around it if it is a wildtype. if not then it will be a true melanoid.

I'm due to getting it in 3 weeks from a local axolotl breeder. His axolotls breeds like nuts in oil drums and no filtration, they're pretty good.
But I'm not too sure if he'll have melanoids since the axolotls probably bred with different colours. But I found a local petshop sells melanoids, axthantics, white albinos and golds (never much leucistics there). I'm pretty excited though. Mum's deciding on an axthantic (melanoid albino isn't it?) so my Kuro Ryu won't be lonely.

Yeah, it is cut sideways I think. I would be going over to his place to pick 'em up. I'll let ya know if it's cut from the top rather than side ways.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
