i have 2 axols, one white one and one brown one. they are both about 6 inches long now and i was wondering when or if they would breed. how do you tell what sex they are? both their butts look the same to me. i thought i read somewhere that axols can reach 12 inches, tail included of corse. every one ive seen has been about 6 inches. how big do they have to be to mate? whats the difference between a mud puppy and an axol? they both have the same hair-do's. could you keep axols and mud puppys in the same tank?

you could possibly sex the axolotls at that age/size, but it'll be hard cause the probably havn't reached sexual maturity yet. they usually do this when they reach 20-25 cm (8-10 in) how old are they? i have no idea what a mudpuppy is. but i can probably help you with breeding (trying to) your axolotls. mine are breeding quite happily, i have had 5 successful lots so far.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
