Split cloaca

I have a lot of trouble telling the difference between male and female axolotls, but I'm sure Gevolin is male and that's what I was told when I got him. Lately he occasionally wiggles vertically on his tail like a dolphin, keeping his head out of the water. This morning when he did it, I noticed his cloaca was split in half and it seemed white between the split. Does anyone know what this is and what I do about it?

Check out the pics I put i the photo albums under "Gender" I think. If it looks like these he is probably ok and is a he.

Okay, I just found it. I still can't tell so I'll just take a photo and put it up here. It'll be a couple of weeks or so, I need to get the film developed.

Oh yeah as for his behaviour if it's an occaisional thing this it doesn't mean anything is wrong.
All mine do that from time to time.
Axies do have simple lungs as well as gills. So every now and then they fill them. I bet he burps too.

On the cloaca thing if he is only young it does look very pale white with a split in it (more noticble on wildtypes due to contrast) and you can't be confident of what sex he is until older.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
