Boy or Girl & age

I am trying to work out if i have boys or girls, i have looked at the biology site page, and it has helped a bit, but i still don't know.

They are both the same size about 16cm. I finally got them to stay still in the front of the tank and measured them.

The albino one has got black tips on its feet and a small bump/lump behind the back legs.

The black one seems to have light tips on its feet and no bump/lump what so ever.

The white one is hungry and eating well but the black one is not eating.

I have only had them 1 week and the black one did start to eat but has now stopped.

Is this normal.

All levels are normal, 19 degrees, cycled tank.

Any help would be appreciated.

Your axies maybe too young to sex. Of my young males, one was noticeably mature by 8 months, large bump/cloaca behind rear legs; whereas what I thought was a girl (now 16months old) has just recently developed a large cloaca and is very definitely a boy as I saw him laying spermataphore round the tank last night and removed both him and hopefully all his spermataphore so our girls won't breed.

Light tips on toes for dark wildtypes or black toetips on white/albinos or golden axies are the start of an axie maturing. Ours started developing the light/dark toetips at about 14cm/6months.

Thanks, i guess we will just have to wait and see.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
