went to buy sand today for my tank but they didn't have any, they tried to sell me bird grit. pet shop said it did the same thing but i'm not sure.

has anyone tried it, will it be ok to use

You can buy it at hardware store, something like Bunnings or Mitre 10. Ask for playsand, about you get a 25kg bag for about $5 or so, probably about same amount there!

Bird grit is made of calcium carbonate. It would raise the pH of your water, big time. Using a little bird grit in a tank is helpful (it counteracts problems some people have with build-up of acidic pH), but putting a lot of it in as a substrate could be deadly.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
