Thinking about getting some axolotls

SO I bought a used tank that was for sale at the local pet shop. It's 29 gals, and hasn't been cleaned. How many adults can comfortably live in this? What should I do to clean it? And I hear about this cycling thing, and have read the article on it, but I don't 100% understand it.. also, the tank used to hold tropical fish.

I'm going to assume it's a 29 tall, which has the same footprint as a 20 long. This means you can comfortably fit 1 or maybe 2 (this might be tight) adults in the tank.

I would clean it with a 10% bleach solution, and then fill it with water and let it sit for a few days.

Cycling is basically the promotion of healthy bacteria. Axolotls will excrete ammonia as a waste product. Ammonia is toxic. You will grow bacteria that will convert ammonia to Nitrites. Nitrites are also toxic, so you'll grow another type of bacteria that convert nitrites to nitrates. It's really not hard, just a long process.

ok sounds good.

It's pretty funny that pet store owners try to seem like they know what they are talking about... she told me 5 or 6... but idk if she ment adults.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
