Tank settling....

Hi,I started a tank just over a week ago, its dechlorinated , has the necessary bacteria added and is filtered...how long should i leave it before adding an axie?

Nobody could give you an exact answer to the amount of time it will take, but if you check the water parameters, when the ph is between 6.5 and 8, ammonia is 0, nitrite 0 and nitrate something like 5 (not so sure about nitrate) then the tank is cycled. Cycling usually takes months, so i'd stick in your axie just whenever it's a safe level. You'll need to clean your water out more regularly until it's cycled.

I put my axies in before my tank finished cycling (I thing a lot of people do that though) as long as everything is kept at a safe level then they should be fine.

Shaun - The "safe level" is after the tank has cycled.

Ammonia 0, nitrite 0 and a low nitrate level.

yeah i have a test kit...i test it every few days, seems to be going well.thanks for the links

Keep a VERY close eye on it then - it doesn't take a lot to "crash" a cycle.

Whenever I'm working on my other forums, I advise NOT putting animals in until fully cycled.
I'm not saying this isn't possible - but please keep checking it every day.

Good Luck!

Hehehe...

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
