i have 2 at the moment. Hoping to breed them. If i am successful in breeding them, what size tank do you recommend for the fry?

Funny that's what my husband said too! Now 10 axies on, we have just separated our 11mth olds into what we hope are males and females tanks; esp. after hearing of some unexpected egg laying by NZ owners.

Best to check with the experts in eggs, breeding section. You know they can lay up to 1000+ eggs don't you? It can be very time consuming, probably more time consuming than looking after adults. Have you really thought about what's involved?

None of ours have ever bred. Our 11mth olds we got when they were just 2mths from a breeder and the 3 year olds, who have never bred, we've only had since Jan and Mar this year. We would rather take care of these ones, ensure they are all happy and as healthy as can be without even thinking of breeding them.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
