New Axi - Problems?

I have recently acquired an axi. Shortly after purchasing I got a phone call requiring me to rush away for a meeting for a week. And now, whilst sat in my hotel I am reading through this and worrying weather he will be ok.

On purchasing I filled my 3ft tank with large gravel / pebbles (I've kept many many reptiles so figured impaction problems might be the same).

Filled the tank with 1/2 dechlorinated water and 1/2 with water from the axi's old tank in the shop - the guy recommended this for bacteria.

However, I have also got an internal filter, which is turned right down and just has a bit of water flow from the back to the front of the tank. But the the rest of the tank is clear of flow. Its also reasonably quiet. The water temp was at 18 and he has plenty of hides / plants etc.

However, having phoned my g/friend she is saying the axi is very still and rarely moves at all. Is this stress? Could anything be up?

I was planning to cycle the water as soon as I return friday night.

Any ideas? Thanks

Sounds like normal behavior to me. Your setup sounds good. Axies spend a lot of time just sitting around - in the wild, they would probably be waiting for stray insects to wander by for dinner. Has it eaten yet? Be sure your g/f knows to remove all uneaten food, as your tank isn't cycled yet.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
