can you use the larger size gravel? Its like little pebbles?
I had little gravel and replaced that with sand. Got rid of the sand and now have nothing.
I would prefer something on the bottom.
We got rid of the sand cause the axies were getting sick. Have now learnt that the water is all wrong.(ph,nitrite,ammonia). Have got the axies in another tank till we fix it. They were very sick. skin peeling and one of them was constantly gulping air.

You cud still use sand; or large river rocks - they're about 1.5 to 2inches in size. Gravel/pebbles even the glass kind up 1cm in size can still be swallowed and may lead to probs. Or, some people have large flat rocks in their tanks.

some people get large bits of slate and just put that on the bottom, looks pretty cool but youd have to lift it up each water change to make sure nothing got underneath which would spoil the water

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
