I assume you mean tank rather than cage! Not sure how big a 20 gallon tank is as we use litres and size measurements. But a L:2ft/600mm/60cm x W:1ft/300mm/30cm x H:1ft/300mm/30cm wud be ok for 2 juvies to start with. As they get bigger might be more ideal to have a bigger/longer tank for the two of them (3ft/900mm/90cm long) as the 2fter may get a bit cramped. And with hiding places, we have separate ones for our axies (have four together in a tank) but they all squash into the same one or same corner regardless!)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
