He is about a year and a half old, and i always considered him a male, though he doesn't have a large cloaca.

do you have a top down shot? some male clocas can be female sized. looks to me like its a male just from the skinny tum, females tummies tend to be rounder not relativley flat on the bottom like males. also how big is he?

one of joans axise surprised her, she thought he was a she until one day she put him in with the females and BOOM!

he is about 11" - so definately full grown, although i've had a 13" axolotl a few years back.

This is the best i could do, he was going insane so i let him go after one shot.

looks like hes got a bit of swelling and definatly not fat enough to be a female (there are exceptions though and the angle could hide tummy fatness!) but id say male.

I had one like this that I assumed was a female. I mean, after a year and a half and at 9 inches long, it was full grown. It didn't have a large cloaca at all, and then one day his tankmates started throwing out spermatophores and he developed his cloaca.

I agree with everyone else, it looks male.

peter- short tails dont really help tell the sexes, some people go by the head width as well but its probably not very reliable, even if theyre fat and have a no cloaca they can still be males (ie joans axie hehe)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
