Burping/hiccuping?

I've had my axies for about 2 months, so i'm pretty new to the whole thing.

Today when I fed them their pellets Carlos gulped down a lot at once and now he seems to have the hiccups/ constant burping. Occassionally under his chin swells up with air... is this really bad? Is he choking or something or is it just gas?

I hope he's okay....

I've never seen that - could he be trying to throw up? They tend to heave if they've had too much and the waters too cold.

Hi Christine - Welcome to the forum.

Let us know if he doesn't stop doing that. He could of got a pellet caught in his mouth or throat and is trying to work it down.

If he doesn't stop, posting a picture if you can would be good.

There is a lot of information on basic axolotl care at caudata's sister site : http://www.axolotl.org
that you should check out.

Also at the Indiana University axolotl colony page: :http://www.indiana.edu/~axolotl/axolotls/faq2.html

And there is a good article on tank cycling here: http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/cyclingEDK.shtml

Thanks guys, he's stopped doing it now...think he swallowed too many little pellets at once and was trying to get them down/throw them back up. I will separate them on the dish from now on so he only eats one or two at a time.

Thanks for your help!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
