Where to start?

Well, I've suddenly become an avid pet lover within the past few months as I've suddenly brought a pair of dwarf hamsters(for the girlfriend) and a leopard gecko(soon to be two). My girlfriend tells me I can only have one more pet... so I need something with water, but I need something that I would be interested in...

and there they are on the internet...

Axolotls.

Love at first sight, so after a little more research, I come to the conclusion that I want a pair. And now I'm here, wondering where is a good place to start.

Suggestions, hints, tips, site links, anything that the veteran Axolotl owner feels is a good thing to know would be greatly appreciated.

And anyone in the New Orleans, Louisiana area please respond too. Thanks in advance.

Hey, If you want some Axolotls, try Michael Shrom From PA. He usually sells Axolotls. he posts sometimes on this site. Not sure if he has any avaible right now. you can ask him.

Hi Johnathan welcome to the forum.
Your tank will need to be set up and cycled before you are ready for axolotls. That takes 30 days or more.

So while you are waiting, start by reading these:

come back and ask any questions you may have

Thanks for the prompt reply. My first question would be is a 20 gal tank suffecient space for two axolotl? And would there be a need for a 20 gal wide, or 20 gal high?

A 20 long is sufficient for 2 adult axolotls. I've got some juveniles that need to be rehomed. Send me a private messege.

A twenty gallon long tank would be better than a 20 high as it would provide more floor space.

I always suggest to buy as large of tank as you can (within reason of its purpose), as larger tanks are easier to maintain water quality in.

Well, I'm not ready to purchase my new friends just yet. I need to make sure I have a good setup for them.

But out of curiousity... anyone have a site link where I could find pictures of the various breeds(colors)?

And also, what pump is recommend 'by the people' as the best for housing them?

And "Axie" is short for Axolotls, right?

If you start at the links I gave you most of the colors are covered at http://www.axolotl.org

There are lots of pictures in the gallery here in the forum.

Do you mean filter instead of pump? Canister filters are the best (IMHO), but the output must be baffled so there is no current in the tank.

Yes people here use axie a lot instead of axolotl.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
