The temp in my tank is about 25-27 degrees C (78-80 degrees F) is this ok?

The temp always stays that way. My axies seem fine. They eat normally and are acting normally and are not showing any signs of stress.
 
You want to keep your axolotl tank at about 20C at the highest.

Keeping the tank in a cool area of the house, (some would suggest on the floor,) or a fan blowing cool air over the water. I use frozen water bottles, but with those, you have to be careful not to fluctuate the temperature too much, as that will also stress them out.

I picked up this little unit on ebay. It hasn't been tested in really hot temperatures yet, but it's about 30 today and my tank is holding a steady 16 degrees, with the tank lights on.

Dot's right, specialised aquarium chillers can be really expensive, so why not try and find a small, portable air-conditioning unit just for the room where you keep your axolotls? Check all the local papers for second hand units, or even look online- I'm really happy with my little cooler!
 
What im going to do is when i get the tank back to my place (its currently at my girlfriends house) it will be situated in a cooler palce and it will be in an air conditioned room, and also if needed a fan will be applied. The tank wont be in direct sunlight, and will (when its at my palce) be in a nice suitable darkish area.

If the need arises to get a cooler i will look around and even check out ebay.

My axie is an air conditioned room and the tank sits on about 25 degrees C I haven't had any problems with her she has been happy this way for over a year now.
It is nearly impossible to keep it below 24 in the summer in WA.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
