The other day, I was over at my Mom's house for supper. Every night for about a week, a baby toad had been paying a visit to the side of her house once she turned the outside lights on, taking advantage of the bugs drawn by the light.
When I went out at around 10pm, I finally saw the little fellow that Mom had been telling me about. He's a new morph, with a bit of a tail still in residence. He's tiny! He could sit in the middle of a nickel and still not cover the whole coin.
Really cute! He's sort of a bronzeish colour with small spots, the typical rougher skin of a toad, and a fine bone structure.
Because I was afraid my mother's dogs would step on him or try to eat him, I herded him onto a piece of cardboard and moved him off the sidewalk and onto the grass, still well within bug-finding range. What a sweetie!
This year has been a bumper year for local amphibians. For years, I hadn't seen or heard amphibians of any species in my town. The last time I had seen frogs and toads, I was 9. I'm 28 now. I was convinced that no toads or frogs were in my city anymore. Then this year happened! I have seen/heard so many frogs and toads this year! Wow. The spring peepers and grey tree frogs are still chorusing in the swampy area behind my house, I am hearing Green Frogs and Bull Frogs calling at night, and I have seen a lot of them around.
Whatever the reason, I am happy they are there.
