Hey everyone, I'm still trying to navigate myself around the new site, but would like to ask a quick question first. I brought home a s.s. terrestris last week. It's about 5 inches long, and has been hiding most of the time. It hasn't eatten yet, I've been offering him/her an earthworm. It was fed crickets at the store, should I try this instead since that's what's it's used to? I know a week isn't long for this shy species to be in a new home. Just wondering what your experiences have been bringing home a fire salamander? Behaviors, eating habits, etc. and if you could offer any tips on making my new little guy feel more safe and at home. Thanks =)

I have six of these ,five will eat almost anything ,one will only eat crickets or faster moving prey. There is a train of thought that the first food they eat is somehow imprinted in there brain so if they eat crickets or such as a first food then they will always be on the look out for similar food items. I'm still sitting on the fence on that thought because i have fire sals that eat anything, but i also have three gallaica, two will eat anything one only crickets...I would say persevere with earth worms for a while as they are better for them than just crickets...

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
