Hi, I'm new to the site. My Tiger Salamander just grew up, morphed, or whatever you call it. He/she is in a terrestrial tank, loves to burrow, seems delighted to be misted with water, but hasn't eaten in a week! I haven't seen any eating since I pulled him out of the aquatic tank. Maybe it was too soon. The gills were gone, seemed to be breathing air most of the time. Used to eagerly eat night crawlers or red wigglers from a tweeezers. I have put a single tiny cricket in the tank, and I don't see it anymore...maybe Chester ate it when I wasn't looking. I read somewhere that some individuals stop eating during morphing. How can I get this guy to eat? Should I be worried or patient?

I have never kept a Tiger Salamander before. Anyhow, when my C.O. morphs they needed a long time to start eating. I think you should just be more patient and keep trying. But dont stress it.

During this time, your salamander will probably more likely to accept cricket that is wondering around then feeding from tweezer. So I would suggest you to keep trying with cricket feeding.

Maybe you can describe how you are currently setting up the tank. What kind of substrate? Have you provided a small water dish? ....etc Maybe someone with more experience in tiger salamander can confirm if your setup is proper.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
