I have 2 big axolotls (about 30cm) and 2 smaller ones (about 12cm)... they are currently in 2 different tanks. What size should the smaller ones be when I put them in with the big ones? TIA

Our adult axies sharing same tank have a 2-3cm size difference. If the small ones were put in now, they may be mistaken for food.

I reckon when the smaller ones are 2 thirds the size then they would be able to get in. Put them in when they're maybe 18-22 cm long. :D

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
