got my 1st axie today, he or she is quite big and white colour, when i had her the gills were red now they are a mucky colour? also looks as though she has dirt on her face im not sure if its her colouring. she has eaten half a frozen beef heart cube. how do you tell what sex axie is?

If s/he has dark eyes you have a leucistic. By mucky do you mean, paler in colour? Usually when they're active/stressed or eating their gills are bright red. When they're inactive/settle/sleep their gills go paler.

The "dirt" on the face is usual for leucistics. Some do have actual dark markings which if they're anything like our ones and they snuffle/dig in the sand the sand tends to settle round their faces. Ours look more like chimney sweeps! Their dark markings aren't as prominent when they're kept out of the tank in a bare container full of dechlorinated water for a week or so, the sand comes of.

Approximately how long is she? Check this link out: www.axolotl.org/biology.htm if still not sure then take a side photo (showing back legs and tail region) and one from the top of the tank looking down and attach them. Someone will be able to help.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
