Quite suddenly my white (not albino) axie is sick. Woke up this morning to two gaps in the tail and fin which appear shrunken rather than bitten; one eye that's turned white and a gaping cloaca(??) with white cottony stuff hanging out. There are a couple of pin-prick sized black dots amongst the cottony stuff. Roxy won't take food but is swimming OK. Strangely enough he/she (how do you tell?-am new to this) keeps swimming towards the filter outflow. Pet shop advised salt bath, which I did and the colour seemed to improve. Have isolated Roxy but have no filter for isolation tank. Is that OK?

What are your water parameters? Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate. What is the temperature at which you keep the tank? What kind of substrate do you have (gravel, sand, no substrate, etc)? Do you use water dechlorinator?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
