I bought a FB newt, bart, a few months ago. I originally had a chinese fb newt, froogle, that I happen to know is a female cuz she laid eggs a while ago, but ate them before I had a chance to take them out. Bart is half the size of Froogle but was more aggresive while eating his worms. He will eat at anytime. This was good because now Froogle eats anything I put in the tank which she didnt before and is more aggresive at eating as well. They are always together and on top of each other. Even when they eat they get together and hold each other on the surface to eat together or when they eat the worms from the bottom of the tank they always eat together. Could it be possible for bart to be male ? He is 2.5 inches long while froogle is more like 4.5 inches long. My main questino however is , when i bough bart the tank said that the newts were paddletail newt. Bart does not look like a paddle tail however, but most of the time his skin color gets very light and brownish, grayish in color. It is rare when his skin is almost like froogles, black. Is it normal that his skin get really pale ? Ive tested the water and everything is fine. His skin has always been pale like this though. Froogle never gets light in color like bart does. Is this normal ? Could it be that bart is a paddle tail ? Other than his color he looks like a chinese fb newt. His tail is not thick like a paddle tails.

Here are pictures of Bart (the one that I bought as a paddle tail, do you think he is a paddle tail ?)

Thanks in advance

bart is a chinese fb for sure. their skin colors range, so some can be really dark and some can be really light naturally. from the shots i think bart is male, but it would be better if you could post a pic of his cloaca.

The climbing on one another at the surface doesn't mean that one is or isn't a male. The do not breed in that manner.

What do you have for them to climb out of the water and when you say you tested the water and everything was fine, what did you test for and what were the levels?

What is the temperature in the tank?

Ed

I have tested the amonia, ph levels and they were normal. The temperature is around 60-65 F.

In addition to ammonia, you must also test for nitrite and nitrate.

Optimal levels of Ammonia and nitrite are 0, and for nitrite, any reading under 80 is appropriate.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
