How many toes are there supposed to be on an axolotls foot?
I have a very old axie who has 4 toes on one of her back legs.....6 toes on the other back leg...........3 toes on a front leg....and the other front leg is currently missing!!!!
My two other axies have had the odd nipped foot and also have a varied number of toes!
Does anyone know? I'm just curious!

The 'norm' is 4 toes on the front and 5 toes on the back. However, it's certainly not unusual to have alternative numbers.

Kia Ora Natalie,

One of my axies has four toes on one front foot and 6 on the other, we got him as an adult so im not sure why this has happened adds to the interest factor though.

I have been told it may have been from an injury and regeneration or Hendrix is just a freak.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
