you cant have any other animal in the tanks with axolotls and while some people feed feeder fish to axolotls i dont. i keep fish and know they feel fear and distress so could never feed a live fish to mine. also some fish carry deasese that can be passed on. its your call but they dont need live fish to be happy and well fed and the fish may get its own back by nipping at the gills or making the axi sick.

I agree with Shelly. Also, if you bought it from the petshop/elsewhere, you'd need to quarantine them for 30 days, in the same way you introduce new axolotl companions, to ensure it's healthy. And then a better idea is to breed them yourself. Don't guppies have different temperature needs to an axolotl?

If you want it to have a real hunt then introduce something else live (ie not fish), ours will hunt earthworms if they can get them before they bury within the substrate (otherwise ours will dig/snuffle away at the sand until they've achieved their goal!)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
