Axie on MSN??

I heartily applaud them getting the facts right!

I thought It was cool that it was at woodland park here in seattle a mile from my place too- what other zoos have axolotls?

Detroit Zoo (although all their stock is inbred).

I guess you could assume based on this article:

http://www.detroitzoo.org/Attractions/Amphibiville/NACC/

... but, just because they have had a healthy stock since 1969 does not mean that new genetics were prohibited to the breeding processes at this institution.

Unless anyone has any evidence to prove that they are inbred...??

I was always under the impression that all captive and wild axolotls were, in some way or another, inbred due to the small wild popultation and inbreeding in captivity. I find it interesting that axolotls are actually at a zoo though. Are they direct decendants of w.c. individuals, or just 'wild-type' captives that have possibly been cross bred with other neotenous Ambystomids?

I'm fairly convinced significant inbreeding does occur but I believe there's sufficient diversity in captive populations for it never to be a serious problem. I think inbreeding is more a term to be applied to immediate relative interbreeding for several generations, so when Kaysie made her inbreeding remark I wanted to hear some justification.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
