my resent addition, a female about 3years old, was yesterday floating at the top of her tank. so i went shopping for suitable fridge containers to put her in. on my return home i organised water and checked fridged temp. then went to pull her out of her tank but she hid in her cave and so i left her. since she has been happy on the bottom of her tank hunting slaters and seems fine. so was it a leisure thing or is she unwell?

My two little treasures occasionally decide to float ( usually one small hand holding on to the tiniest leaf)..It sounds like you where prepared for action and hopefully it was teasing you. Do check however the water for ammonia, nitrates, nitrites and temp to eliminate anything there. All the best

one of my ones (fraggle) often floats about the top of the tank, letting the slight current move her around.

hi, thanks for your replies. yes the water is all ok, and the temp is around 10-11 degrees i like it cold for her as when i got her she was passing 1cm gravel. so heres hoping she dosnt have any stuck.

Depending on the size of your axie, you can get away with buying the $2 shop containers or using an 2l icecream container (just don't use detergent to wash them, use baking soda and water).

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
