I found this site trying to get information about salamanders and care. I tried the fish aquarium thing and failed miserably.:( My grandchildren are very sad that the fish are gone, and was thinking about using my aquarium to house salamanders. I have no idea how to start, take care of, and find healthy sallies. Anyone interested in helping me get information to start? I am not starting until I am VERY sure I can do this. I certainly don't want my "boys" upset about any more death.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

If you don't have much experience with keeping a terrarium, you might want to pick a pet that is easier and more active. The problem with sals is that most of them stay hidden most of the time.

I'm thinking some kind of lizard or snake would work well. It's a lot easier to find a captive-bred lizard than a CB sal, and also easier to find good advice on taking care of them.

I'd have to agree with Jen. Salamanders are a bit harder to care for than most people recognize. Their low heat tolerance is a special problem.

I would recommend the leopard or crested gecko for you. They are both rather easy to find in pet stores, are almost always captive bred and therefore much healthier. They are also rather easy to setup an environment for. Handling these animals is also possible depending upon the age of the grandchildren, something that should not be done with amphibians.

If you want more information send me a PM (click on my name to the left and select "Send Private Message" and I will give you some more information and helpful links.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
